Participation in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

According to the 2001 No Child Left Behind Legislation all states, districts, and schools within districts that receive Title I funds, must participate in the NAEP reading and mathematics assessments every other year at grades 4 and 8. This requirement started with the 2003 administration on NAEP.


North Carolina has voluntarily participated in State NAEP since 1990. The state board of education adopted policy to support the participation on North Carolina schools in national and international assessments such as NAEP.


A sample of schools and students are selected to represent the state on the NAEP assessments. NAEP uses a stratified random sampling design to select the representative sample for the assessments.
