ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH UNPACKING STANDARDS

Below you will find unpacking standards documents to support teachers in their understanding of the common core and essential standards. The unpacking documents demonstrate at a granular level the knowledge and skills students are expected to master at a particular grade.

Important Note: The current Standard Course of Study will continue to be taught and tested during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years. New standards and assessments are to be implemented for the first time beginning with the 2012-13 school year. Please send any thoughts, feedback, questions and ideas about additional resources that would help you start preparing to teach the new standards to feedback@dpi.nc.gov.

MATH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS CROSSWALKS

Below you will find initial crosswalk documents that compare the current Standard Course of Study to the newly adopted standards. This document is not intended to answer all questions about the nuance of the new standards versus the old but instead to help schools and teachers get a head start on internalizing and planning to teach the new standards.

Important Note: The current SCoS will continue to be the taught and tested standards in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years. We expect the new standards to be taught and assessed in schools for the first time in the 2012-13 school year.

Please send our content area sections any thoughts, feedback, questions and ideas about additional resources that would help you start preparing to teach the new standards.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS

Located below are samples of content specific graphic organizers. These visual representations assist the student in organizing abstract “big picture” information that is new, overwhelming or misunderstood in the new standards.  Research supports the utilization of graphic organizers as a contributing factor in improving student performance. The examples are to model varied organizers and their use in provoking student engagement, organization, and understanding, thus equipping the teacher with the knowledge to develop and use such tools effectively with the new standards.  Important Note: The current Standard Course of Study will continue to be taught and tested during the 2011-12 school year. New standards and assessments are to be implemented for the first time beginning with the 2012-13 school year. These Graphic Organizers are in draft form and are undergoing review for feedback. Send your feedback to feedback@dpi.nc.gov.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

This tool provides educators with terminologies that represent the big, powerful concepts and ideas teachers need to know and understand in order to effectively teach the new Common Core State and North Carolina Essential Standards and use supporting materials. The Glossary of Terms is not meant to be exhaustive, but seeks to address critical terms and definitions essential in building content knowledge and understanding but also in promoting consistency across disciplines, increased student outcomes, and improved parent communication. This is a living document and will undergo additions in terms over time.
