MORE STUDENTS, NEW TECH PROGRAMS MARK NEW SCHOOL YEAR

More than 40,000 local students are headed back to classrooms this week.Public school systems in Carteret, Jones and Duplin counties open on Monday and students return to Onslow County Public Schools on Tuesday.Onslow County Schools ended the last school year with just more than 25,000 students and is projecting an enrollment of between 25,428 and 25,612 students this year.The new school year brings new opportunities and initiatives.Students attending 19 Onslow schools will be able to bring their own mobile devices, such as tablets and cell phones, which will be used for classroom work.

The school system also has increased career and technical education opportunities for students, including its first plumbing program for high school students.“We have a clear focus on personalization and choice within our school system. Our children’s only limitation is what we do not give them the opportunity to do,” said Lesley Eason, Onslow County Schools associate director of student services.
