I-SS STUDENTS BEGIN RECEIVING THEIR LAPTOPS
A surprise showering of snow fell outside of Debra Millsaps’ sixth-grade language arts classroom at North Iredell Middle School in the early afternoon on Tuesday. But instead of rushing to the windows for a view like usual, students hardly even noticed – the Venn diagrams they were making on their new laptops were simply too engaging. By the end of the period, every child in the class had finished the assignment and turned in their work. The 100 percent completion rate, Millsaps said, was cause to celebrate.
“That is so phenomenal. I was like, ‘Whoa baby!’ It was wonderful,” said Millsaps. “The children couldn’t contain themselves. It was a learning-fest in my classroom.”
On Monday, NIMS sixth-grade students were the first of any in Iredell-Statesville Schools to receive laptops as part of the district’s one-to-one initiative for middle and high school students. Tuesday, the seventh-graders got their hands on devices, and today, eighth-graders will receive theirs.
