HILLCREST ELEMENTARY GETS MORE FRESH FRUIT THROUGH GRANT

Hillcrest Elementary is one of 158 schools in the state to get more fresh fruits and vegetables through a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant.

The $4 million grant from the USDA Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program aims to improve students’ diets in the 2014-15 school year by adding variety to the fruits and vegetables in school lunches and giving students healthier options for snacks.

Hillcrest has won the grant for about the past five years, according to Kathy Oakley, food services director with the Alamance-Burlington School System.
