INTERACTIVE VIDEO CONFERENCING (IVC)
Preparation Up-Front

What is IVC?
Interactive video conferencing occurs when participants at 2 or more sites are "connected" electronically in such a way that they can hear, see, and interact with each other in real time. Much of the IVC occuring today is conducted over the Internet using IP (or Internet Protocol). Any one with the correct equipment and enough Internet bandwidth can participate.

How is IVC used by educators?

IVC can be

  • a means of sharing classes. One site will have a teacher while the other(s) have students and, often, a facilitator.
  • a source of professional development. Teachers can participate in university courses, workshops, and/or conferences where they have the opportunity to ask questions.
  • used to make connections between classes in the same city, state, county or even on the other side of the earth. They can be email pals. They might work on the same project.
  • a means of integrating curricula by having a presentation by a resource such as a museum.
  • used for virtual field trips.
  • a meeting place for students and public officials.

What do I need to investigate before actually purchasing equipment?

  • What technical constraints must be dealt with (bandwidth, technical support, etc.)?
  • What budget will be needed? (Don't forget maintenance!)
  • Where will be it set up and what constraints does that entail?
  • If we use this resource to provide a class, will a facilitator be necessary?
