NC Battle of the Books NC School Library Media Association This reading incentive competition allows for children and teens to choose from different lists of books based on elementary or middle school reading levels. Book lists are chosen by the NC School Library Media Association and contests are between schools across NC. While some goals are to foster teamwork, discussion, and competition around books, the true purpose of the competition is to encourage children to actively read and enjoy doing so. Summer Reading Program NC Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped As part of the Summer Reading Program by the State Libraries of NC, NCLBPH patrons who sign up for the program and read at least five books from June to August will earn a prize and certificate. Dyslexia Awareness Month Decoding Dyslexia NC DD, NC is a grassroots movement driven by NC families, educators, and professionals concerned with the limited access to educational interventions for dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities within our public schools. We aim to raise awareness, empower families to support their children, and inform policymakers on best practices to identify, remediate, and support students with dyslexia in NC public schools. Reach Out and Read Reach Out and Read Pediatricians incorporate literacy awareness into health care for young children by educating parents that healthy development for their children goes beyond physical care and encompasses developmental and cognitive care as well. ​At regularly scheduled well-child visits, doctors: Ask questions about family reading patterns when completing developmental screenings. Inform parents regarding age-appropriate pre-literacy skills and expectations. Give tips on effective practices to encourage shared family reading. Age-appropriate books (provided by the Alamance Partnership for Children) are given to the children to take home. ACPL Connect Alamance County Public Libraries Students no longer need library cards. Instead, students can use their school ID number to access library services. The default PIN is the last 4 digits of the student ID number. All ABSS, The Burlington School, and Hawbridge School students are automatically enrolled in this program. Every Child Ready to Read The Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children Every Child Ready to Read is an initiative created to encourage parents, as their child(ren)’s first teacher, to participate in enrichment activities that create the building blocks for reading. There are six building blocks that children need to begin reading. They are: print awareness, print motivation, letter knowledge, vocabulary, phonological awareness, and narrative skills. Parents can encourage the development of these building blocks by: talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. It Takes a Village Project Elon University This is a program that uses a collaborative approach to help children in the community who are struggling to read. Children, Elon students, and trained community volunteers are paired together for weekly tutoring sessions on campus. While in an environment rich with available resources, the tutors assess the individual reading challenges of the children and show their parents different techniques they can use at home to help improve reading skills. Augustine Literacy Project Burlington Chapter Augustine Literacy Project The mission of the Burlington ALP is to improve the reading, writing and spelling abilities of low-income children at Newlin Elementary school who struggle with literacy skills. The project trains and supports volunteer tutors who provide free, long-term, one-on-one instruction using the Orton-Gillingham approach and Wilson Reading System™ materials. The curriculum is research based, structured, systematic, multi-sensory and phonetic. It has proven successful with children who have learning differences and with those whose reading skills are impaired by poverty (lack of exposure to print and enriched vocabulary) or English language learner issues. Summer Reading Barnes and Noble Once you give your student a summer reading journal (can be picked up in-store), students pick any book and read at their own pace. Students complete the reading journal by listing the books they read and describing their favorite part of each book. After reading eight books, they redeem their completed journal for a free book. Imagination Library Scholastic To participate, students must be registered by an educator, meaning a teacher, public librarian or community organization leader. Once registered, students will receive a username and password from their educator, librarian or community organization leader to log into scholastic.com/summer, and begin logging their summer reading minutes. Project Learn Alamance County Boys and Girls Club Project Learn is an evidence-based, comprehensive program strategy. Through this program, Club staff and volunteers use all the areas and programs in the Club to create opportunities for these high-yield learning activities. Hickory Public Schools' Book Bus Local business and municipal support Hickory Public Schools' Book Bus is a 2016 initiative that employs a grassroots method to bring literacy into several localities within the Hickory region. Each school day, the mobile library with children's literature stops at a different public housing residence for nearby children to peruse the shelves, read, and loan a book. They are encouraged to enjoy the colorful, creative social atmosphere of the bus as well as to return each week. The first front shelves are dedicated to early literacy books as that is the primary demographic target. The bus itself is a painted former activity bus for the system and sponsored by many businesses and with municipal sources (including the city library system). Summer programming is also planned.
