State Board of Education Chairman Howard Lee

State Board of Education Chairman Howard N. Lee recently received "The Distinguished Service Award" from the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) in recognition of his outstanding service to public education.

The annual award, which was given to four outstanding state board members who have extensive records of accomplishment, was presented to Lee at NASBE’s 2007 Fall Conference, "Be a Part of the Revolution," held last week in Philadelphia, Pa.

In presenting the award, NASBE Executive Director Brenda Welburn said, "As Chairman of the State Board for the past four years, Howard Lee has become the face of the State Board at conferences, schools and with individuals across North Carolina. His communication and collaboration skills combined with his contacts and experience in the legislature have made Howard Lee one of the most effective and influential educational leaders in North Carolina."

In accepting the award, Lee acknowledged the contributions of fellow Board members. "The work of the State Board of Education is a collaborative venture. I am fortunate to serve alongside other North Carolinians who believe that public schools are our most important institution," Lee said. He added that he was delighted to accept the award and looks forward to the Board’s continuing work on behalf of the children of North Carolina.

During his tenure as Chairman, Lee and Board members have been instrumental in the adoption of policies that have redefined academic rigor and relevance, increased high school graduation requirements, and addressed the health and well-being of students.
