DISTRICTS POST HIGH PASSAGE RATES ON CTE POST-ASSESSMENTS;
CONCENTRATORS SURPASS STATE COHORT GRADUATION RATE

Mount Airy City Schools (92.07%), Yancey County Schools (91.02%), Yadkin County Schools (90.34%) and Ashe County Schools (90.13%) had 90 percent or more of students scoring proficient on state-developed Career Technical Education (CTE) post-assessments taken in 2008-09. Statewide, 80 percent of students tested met this goal.

In addition, 30 districts reported four-year cohort graduation rates of 90 percent or above among students completing a four-course CTE concentration. These "concentrators" had to take at least one capstone or second-level course in the sequence. Statewide, almost 72 percent of all students graduated in four years or less.

Districts reporting this high graduation rate among concentrators were: Elkin City (97.50%), Scotland County (95.85%), Mooresville Graded Schools (95.18%), Dare County (94.87%), Lincoln County (93.83%), Pamlico County (93.62%), Richmond County (93.58%), Craven County (93.53%), Haywood County (93.45%), Ashe County (93.33%), Catawba County (92.86%), Burke County (92.81%), Stokes County (92.50%), Hickory City (92.08%), Swain County (92%), Macon County (91.78%), Clay County (91.67%), Lexington City (91.59%), Randolph County (91.22%), Guilford County (91.15%), Transylvania County (91.12%), Polk County (91.11%), Yadkin County (91.04%), Avery County (91.01%), Jackson County (91.01%), Surry County (90.96%), Onslow County (90.67%), Henderson County (90.67%), Roanoke Rapids (90.54%), and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City (90.54%).

"Career and Technical Education plays an important role in helping prepare students to be globally competitive and college- and career-ready," State Superintendent June Atkinson said. "This is evidenced by the findings of my Career-Ready Commission and its report and recommendations that I plan to release on Thursday at the State Board of Education meeting. Research has shown that CTE courses provide many students with a way to connect what they learn in school with their plans for future education, training and work."

Statewide, more than 72 percent of high school students, or about 310,000 students, take CTE courses each year; and approximately 90 percent of students take at least one CTE course before they graduate. Post-assessments are given in two-thirds of all CTE courses.

The Department's Career and Technical Education Division annually reports performance on eight Performance Indicators to the U.S. Department of Education as a component of the Carl Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006.
