STATE BOARD ADOPTS GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR
2011 LEGISLATIVE SESSION

The State Board of Education today adopted new guiding principles for legislation for the 2011 session at its meeting in Raleigh. Ann McColl, the State Board's new legislative director, will use these principles during her work to inform and assist state legislators on a variety of education policy issues.

"Tough economic conditions require focusing on elements of the public school system that are most important for student success," said State Board of Education Chairman Bill Harrison. "We have made incredible gains in our public schools over the past 25 years. If we are going to continue that progress, education must be the top priority for the 2011-2012 General Assembly and the last area cut in budget deliberations."

In working with members of the General Assembly, the State Board supports the following principles:

  1. Maintain a focus on success for all students;
  2. Provide the infrastructure necessary to support student success and the operation of public schools;
  3. Ensure governance that is transparent, accountable, and effective;
  4. Use innovative, sound approaches to crafting reforms and addressing economic challenges; and
  5. Provide responsible local control and flexibility.
