GARVIN NAMED NEW DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
Staff and students at the NC School for the Deaf at Morganton will benefit from the experience and education of its new director, Dr. Audrey Garvin, who was named to this position on Aug. 1.
State Superintendent June Atkinson welcomed Garvin as director saying, "Dr. Garvin brings exceptional qualifications and experience to Morganton's School for the Deaf and I know students and staff at the school will excel as a result of her leadership."
Prior to her joining the NC School for the Deaf, Garvin served as principal of the New York School for the Deaf in White Plains, NY. While in this role, she supervised and evaluated 40 staff members; developed curriculum standards, assessments and instruction for 100 infants, toddlers, children and adolescents; established a program for Deaf children with sensory processing disorders; and promoted innovation in direct services for Deaf children and their families. Her 35-year educational career has encompassed a number of positions including junior/senior high school assistant principal/principal, Career Academy and Transition Services director, student planning and support specialist, counselor, school psychologist and teacher.
Garvin is a member of the Conference of Executives and Administrators of Schools for the Deaf, Sigma Alpha Pi (the National Society of Leadership and Success), and Kappa Delta Pi (Honor Society for Education).
She received a bachelor of arts, magna cum laude and President's Award in Deaf Education from Flagler College, Fla.; a master in education, School Psychometry, from Georgia Southern College, Ga.; and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Hartford, Conn.
