NEWS RELEASES 2015-16 :: NOVEMBER 17, 2015

District 7 Elementary School (Cumberland County Schools) and Henderson Collegiate Charter School (Vance County) are North Carolina’s 2015 National Title I Distinguished Schools. Since 1996, North Carolina’s National Title I Distinguished Schools program has recognized two outstanding schools each year. Educators working in these schools hold students to high academic standards and demonstrate exemplary practices in delivering the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

State Superintendent June Atkinson commended the honorees for helping students reach their academic goals. “When you visit these classrooms, you find dedicated teachers putting research into practice, promoting parent involvement, and using innovative instructional approaches to engage students,” Atkinson said. “District 7 Elementary and Henderson Collegiate serve as models for other schools seeking to improve academic programs and increase student achievement.”

Winning schools are recognized in one of two categories:
Category I – schools sustained high student performance over three years; and
Category II – schools demonstrated high growth in closing the achievement gap between student groups.

District 7 Elementary is honored in Category I and Henderson Collegiate is recognized in Category II. The schools were selected based on a combination of academic achievement, stakeholder involvement, and creative and innovative programs that contribute to student success. Winning schools were selected after submitting a portfolio and hosting a site visit from the selection committee.

Title I Distinguished Schools from across the country will be honored Jan. 28 during the opening session of the National Title I Conference in Houston, Texas.
