June St. Clair Atkinson was elected as the North Carolina State Superintendent of Public Instruction in November 2004, re-elected in 2008, and re-elected for a third term in 2012. Dr. Atkinson is North Carolina's first woman elected to this position. She heads the NC Department of Public Instruction, an agency which she served for nearly 34 years as a chief consultant and director in the areas of business education, career and technical education, and instructional services. As a former business education teacher, Atkinson has been involved in instruction and curriculum development throughout her career. She is past president of the National Business Education Association, Southern Regional Education Board's High Schools that Work, and the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium. Atkinson is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa and was inducted into East Carolina University's College of Education Educator Hall of Fame in 2008. She received a Bachelor's degree in Business Education from Radford University in 1969, a Master's degree in Vocational and Technical Education from Virginia Tech in 1974, and a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from North Carolina State University in 1996.


Rebecca Garland, Deputy State Superintendent

Rebecca Garland serves as the Deputy State Superintendent for the Department of Public Instruction. Prior to being named to this position in March 2014, she was the Department's Chief Academic Officer. In her 30-plus years in education, Garland has served as the executive director for the North Carolina State Board of Education, an associate superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for Orange County Schools, a director of Middle Schools/Arts/Gifted Education for Alamance-Burlington Schools, a consultant for the NCDPI in content and gifted education, and a teacher with Harnett County Public Schools. She holds a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro, a Master's degree in Education from Campbell University, and a Doctorate in Education Leadership from North Carolina State University.


Maria Pitre-Martin, Chief Academic and Digital Learning Officer

Maria Pitre-Martin rejoins the NCDPI as the Chief Academic and Digital Learning Officer. Prior to being named to this position in March 2016, she was the Superintendent of Schools for the Thomasville City School District. Before joining Thomasville City Schools, Pitre-Martin served as the director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction for the Department of Public Instruction. She has held positions as the Chief Academic Officer for the School District of Philadelphia, and the Assistant Superintendent for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System in Louisiana. Pitre-Martin served as the director of Research and Staff Development for the Fort Bend Independent School District in Sugar Land, Texas and the principal of Oakwood Intermediate School in College Station, Texas. Pitre-Martin received a bachelor's degree in English and Speech in 1989 and a Master's in Organizational Communication in 1997, both from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, which is now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University in 2000. In 2008 Pitre-Martin graduated from the Broad Superintendent Academy.


Philip Price, Chief Financial Officer

Philip Price rejoined the NCDPI in November 2002 as Chief Financial Officer. Price originally joined the Department in 1978 after graduating with degrees in Accounting and Economics from North Carolina State University. He worked in various capacities within the accounting operations of the NCDPI until December 1999. From December 1999 until he returned to the Department in late 2002, Price worked with the Fiscal Research staff of the North Carolina General Assembly where he continued to concentrate on public schools.


Michael Nicolaides, Chief Information Officer

Michael Nicolaides is the Chief Information Officer for the NCDPI. Prior to joining the department in March 2014, he served as Virginia Beach City Public Schools' technology director where for the last decade he led a large team of IT professionals in maintaining, supporting and enhancing the entire IT infrastructure for the school district that served 87,000 users. In addition, he lead the implementation of enterprise application systems such as student information, instructional improvement, content and collaboration, and HR-Payroll systems. Prior to that he was vice president for Information Systems for Orbit Satellite Television and Radio Network in Cyprus and Rome, Italy. Nicolaides is a graduate of Old Dominion University and holds two bachelor of science degrees, one in Computer Science and one in Electrical Engineering, and a master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
