SCHOOL BASED/LINKED HEALTH SERVICES

The goal of school health centers in North Carolina is to increase access to physical and mental health services for youth ages 10 - 19 in local communities by developing or enhancing existing school-based and school-linked health centers. School-based and school-linked health centers are located on school ‘grounds’ and off campus. “School-based” health centers are located within the school setting and provide comprehensive healthcare to students. Several school health centers are located in communities near schools (referred to as “school-linked”) and generally work closely with school staff. Some alternative centers operate from traveling vans or buses and serve several schools or districts within a region or county.

Some school health centers receive funding through the School Health Unit in the Children and Youth Branch of the NC Division of Public Health. The School Health Unit provides technical assistance, credentialing, and contract monitoring annually and/or as needed. Any community-based public or private non-profit agency may apply for funding that supplements local support for school health centers during the request for proposal process. All centers must submit reports on services provided, on a regularly scheduled basis throughout the school year.

School Health Center services may include, but are not limited to:

  • Acute care
  • Chronic disease management
  • Emergency and injury care
  • Vaccinations and immunizations
  • Mental health counseling and referral
  • STD treatment
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Dental and eye exams screening and referral
