Engineering Connections to K-12 Education
The "E" in STEM, the engineering component, is connected to Science, Technology, Mathematics, and courses within the existing Standard Course of Study. Engineering Connections are developed and aligned with the STEM Implementation Rubric Principles. The Key Engineering Elements in the Engineering Connections align characteristics to Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. These Connections enrich courses in the Arts, Career and Technical Education, English Language Arts, Healthful Living, Music, Social Studies, and World Languages as well as Out-of-School programs:

North Carolina STEM Recognition Application
Elementary, Middle, and High Schools or Programs have the opportunity to obtain recognition as a North Carolina STEM School or Program.  In addition, they may become a North Carolina Future-Ready STEM High School or Program of Achievement. Use the STEM Attribute Implementation Rubrics to guide your school or program. The Rubrics outline quality indicators of each STEM Attribute and the varying depths of implementation. All eleven Attributes must be attained to be recognized as a quality STEM Program.


NC STEM Learning Network
The NC STEM Learning Network is a product of North Carolina's K-12 Statewide STEM Education Strategic Plan to harness innovative ways of teaching and learning. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, in partnership with the NC STEM Learning Network, has established a web portal where students, teachers, school systems, parents, business and community partners may gain access to an array of resources promoting STEM education in North Carolina.

The do-it-yourself-guide provides schools, systems, and local community organizations with self-guided tools to engage a broad community of stakeholders in sustainable education.

Grand Challenges of Engineering
Sponsored by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Grand Challenges of Engineering are 14 engineering challenges proposed by a diverse committee of engineers and scientists. The challenges were both achievable and sustainable to help people and the planet thrive. The Grand Challenges website provides materials and resources about the challenges and other related activities.


Common Core State Standards for K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts
On June 2, 2010, North Carolina adopted the Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts released by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. With the adoption of these state-led education standards, North Carolina is in the first group of states to embrace clear and consistent goals for learning to prepare children for success in college and work.


North Carolina Essential Standards
The Essential Standards includes the standards for the newly adopted curriculum for Arts Education, English as a Second Language, Guidance, Healthful Living. Information Technology, Science, Social Studies, World Languages and the Occupational Course of Study.


Career and Technical Education Essential Standards
The 2012 Career and Technical Education (CTE) Essential Standards were approved by the State Board of Education in June 2011 and implemented beginning with the 2012-13 school year. CTE fulfills an increasingly significant role in school reform efforts. Career and Technical educators at the state and local levels partners with business and industry and with community college and other postsecondary institutions to ensure CTE serves the needs of individual students and the state.
