State Board Meets Next Week

The State Board of Education will meet next week, Jan. 8-9, in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh.

Following is a summary of the Board's agenda. Please note that Board members will discuss all agenda items (unless otherwise noted) in their committee meetings on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Board members will summarize their Committee discussions and take action on agenda items as appropriate during their full Board meeting on Thursday, Jan. 9. Following approval of their December minutes, Board members will recognize new Local Board of Education Advisor Richard Hooker, Cleveland County Schools' Board of Education. This will be followed by a special presentation on the Race to the Top Evaluation Report on Teacher Incentives and Strategic Staffing by Trip Stallings and Doug Lauen with the NC State University Friday Institute. NCDPI Race to the Top Director Adam Levinson will then provide an update on the Race to the Top program followed by State Superintendent June Atkinson who will present her Report to the Board. During her report, she will recognize the 2013-14 National Title I Distinguished Schools: Calvin Wiley Elementary (Guilford County Schools) and Jonathan Valley Elementary (Haywood County Schools). NCDPI Legislative and Community Affairs Director Rachel Beaulieu will report on legislative activities, and State Board Staff Attorney Katie Cornetto will follow with a Rules Review Update. Under the Board's Consent Agenda, members will approve the Title III Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAO) Status Report for 2012-13, reports to the NC General Assembly on Implementation of the ABCs and Statewide Consolidated Assistance Program, and Increase Access to Career/Technical Education, sec. 1(b), sec. 2(c)., and the Report on School Connectivity Initiative. Committee chairs will then report out and members will take action on regular agenda items as appropriate. Chairman Bill Cobey will conclude the meeting with his comments and discussion of any old/new business.
