I look forward to seeing most of you on Thursday at the Superintendents' Quarterly meeting at the Sheraton Imperial, Research Triangle Park. It's that time of year when it is extremely important that we stay up-to-speed with the latest news from the legislature and from other activities.

Last week, your communication directors or public information officers received an invitation to a July 30 webinar (details below) to provide them with key information about the school performance grades being reported for the first time this fall, the new format of the NC School Report Cards (scheduled to be available in October) and other details. I encourage you and your communication and accountability staff to participate in this together to facilitate your planning process for these important information releases.

Also, thank you to those of you who have made the decision to opt in to the full suite of Home Base tools. To date, we are up to 107 districts (93 percent), 42 charters (33.3 percent) including 79.5 percent of all students. This is an exciting time for progress toward customizing education for students. I look forward to sharing an update with you on Thursday about our progress in negotiating an even more attractive price for the opt-in cost.

State Superintendent

Update Your Home Base Contact Leads, Please

As you transition back to school for year-rounds or prepare to start your 2014-15 school year, please take just a few moments to make sure your list of key contacts for Home Base is current. We know position changes can happen, so we want to be sure all your contacts are noted and recognized by the Home Base Support Center in the event they call or email us. Please look over the listed "leads" and their backups that your school has identified as key contacts for each area of Home Base: PowerSchool (SIS), Schoolnet (IIS) and TNL (Educator Effectiveness). The list is online at For any changes, please include the person's name, email address and your LEA #. Send that information to Kathy Newbern at
