State Board of Education Meets This Week

The State Board of Education will meet tomorrow through Thursday at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The Board will hold its Planning and Work Session on Tuesday and Wednesday and their regular Board meeting on Thursday. Items up for approval include changes to the 2013-14 Performance and Growth of North Carolina Public Schools report, proposed revisions to the grading scale, Read to Achieve local alternative assessments, report to the General Assembly on the First-Year Implementation of Reach to Achieve Legislation, and the use of Race to the Top funds to help define classroom wireless needs. Transportation Reviews Needed

Last week, district transportation directors receiving new replacement buses for 2014-15 were sent a request to select either (1) the legislative $2,000 payment given as incentive to run the bus an extra year, or (2) a manufacturer and configuration for the new replacement bus. In addition, transportation directors and finance officers were sent a copy of the data that DPI Transportation Services is using to calculate new budget ratings, which will be used in adjusting transportation allotments for 2014-15. Any questions regarding this communication should be directed to Derek Graham at or 919.807.3571.

October to be Declared Anti-Bullying Month

Governor McCrory is expected to declare October as Anti-Bullying month. Attached is some information to assist educators in helping students understand the issue and address ways to reduce or eliminate bullying in schools. Questions regarding the materials may be directed to Ben Matthews at or 919.807.3500.
