State Board of Education Meets Next Week

The State Board of Education will meet next week, Dec. 3-4, in the 7th Floor Board Room, Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh.

Following is a summary of the Board's agenda. Please note that Board members will discuss all agenda items (unless otherwise noted) in their committee meetings on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Board members will summarize their Committee discussions and take action on agenda items as appropriate during their full Board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 4.

Following approval of their November minutes, Board members will recognize the NC Finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and outgoing State Board of Education Local Board of Education Advisor Richard Hooker (Cleveland County Schools). The Board will then hear a special report on the Analysis of Multiple Measures of Teacher Effectiveness.

State Superintendent June Atkinson will follow with her report to the Board, which includes a legislative report from NCDPI Legislative and Community Affairs Director Rachel Beaulieu. State Board Staff Attorney Katie Cornetto will then give a rules review update.

Under the Board's Information Agenda, members will receive a report on Exemplary Alternative Education Programs.

Under the Consent Agenda, members will approve Race to the Top STEM Affinity Network: Final Report, Annual Report on Teachers Leaving the Profession, IHE Performance Report, Distinguished Leadership in Practice: Fourth Annual Evaluation Report – A Final Summary, North Carolina's Future-Ready Leadership Program: An Overview of Current Data, Policies Regarding Education Data in North Carolina, School Transportation Maintenance Manual Review, Infrastructure to Fuel School Buses with Compressed Natural Gas, Report to the General Assembly on Utilization of Contracts, Charter Amendment to Change the Mission Statement for Quest Academy, Annual Report on Charter Schools to the General Assembly, Report to the General Assembly on Charter School Modifications from SB 793 – Adoption of a Fast-Track Replication Process, and NC Virtual Public School Annual Report.

Committee chairs will then report out and members will take action on regular agenda items as appropriate. Chairman Bill Cobey will conclude the meeting with his comments followed by a discussion of any new and old business.
