Also, on a related subject, the education nonprofit Achieve offers a Student Assessment Inventory for School District to evaluate their testing strategies. The inventory tool is described as supporting a process by which districts quantify the number as assessments students are taking and determine the minimum amount of testing necessary to serve diagnostic, instructional and accountability purposes with the aim of both getting a handle on the frequency of testing and ensuring that locally mandated tests are used appropriately and productively. The inventory can be used to generate a discussion with parents, local school boards and the community about how much locally mandated testing is occurring, how much testing is appropriate, whether tests are being used appropriately and how much testing is within local control. The result of carrying out the inventory process can be greater transparency about testing taking place in the schools, a broader understanding of formative and summative assessments and their place in the classroom and the elimination of some unnecessary testing.
