DPI to Study New Assessment Model

About 9,000 5th and 6th grade students will take four shorter, through-grade tests in math and English language arts this as part of a new study conducted by DPI. A State Board of Education task force on testing came up with the idea for the study to explore a different approach to statewide testing that would be more favorable than a single test given at the end of each year.

Currently, students in grades 3-8 take EOG tests in English language arts and math in grades 3-8 and science in grades 5 and 8. As a part of this study, 45 schools in 35 districts will have fifth graders take the new math tests while 25 schools from 35 districts will have sixth graders take the new tests in English Language arts. If the study produces positive results, DPI could pilot the new assessment model in the future. Such a significant change in the statewide assessment program, however, would first require legislative and possible federal approval. Learn more in the PowerPoint presentation here.
