NC AI Summits Were a Success!

NCDPI hosted 2 AI Summits for education leaders and AI steering committees to help guide the responsible adoption and implementation of generative AI in our public schools.  We were pleased that the 380 attendees across the state provided overall very positive reviews and a desire for future similar events.

All NC AI Summit Resources including presentation links and other resources shared by the presenters can be viewed by visiting this NC AI Summit Resources Folder.  All content can be utilized and remixed by North Carolina public schools as long as credit is given and there are no commercial uses.

NEW: North Carolina School Boards Association Updated Policy Recommendations about AI

The North Carolina School Boards Association has issued policies regarding AI use in schools.  The NC School Boards Association updated policy 3220 Technology in Educational Program to include these statements regarding AI Implementation, which are in alignment with the NC Generative AI Implementation Recommendations and Considerations for PK-13 Public Schools.

To summarize, the board encourages the use of generative AI by school system employees and students to expand their skills and capabilities and to prepare students for a future AI-enhanced world and states that all school system employees and students should be AI literate.   The board goes on to recommend professional development for all staff.   

Additionally, Policy 3225/4312/7320 Technology Responsible Use makes recommendations about AI Policies and parental notifications and consent.

Summer of AI: Wednesday Webinar Series Coming Soon!

Vera Cubero and others on the Digital Teaching and Learning Team will host a series of webinars to help guide educators and education leaders in the responsible implementation of generative AI in alignment with North Carolina's AI Guidelines.  

All webinars will be on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30 pm (but not every Wednesday) based on the schedule below.  

  • Tentative topics are also included.  Topics are subject to change based on needs and recommendations from educators.   
  • CEU certificates will be made available for those who join live and engage with the presentation.  
  • All webinars will be recorded and links provided on this page for on demand viewing as well.  
  • PSUs may choose to award CEUs for on demand viewing.

5/29/24 3:30-4:30 pm The Power of the Prompt: Tips and tricks for increasing efficiency & creativity with GenAI The POWER of the PROMPT: Skip the learning curve and learn to work efficiently with AI in an hour! In this session, we will learn the basics of working effectively with Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude by using a prompting framework and expert tips and tricks.  
6/5/24 3:30-4:30 pm Overview of the NC AI Guidelines Get an overview of the NC AI Guidelines (go.ncdpi.gov/AI_Guidelines) from the lead of the NC AI steering committee, Vera Cubero. We will discuss the issues facing public schools int he face of this new AI revolution and how our NC AI Guidelines provide support. We will also have time for Q & A
6/12/24 3:30-4:30 pm Developing PSU Guidelines As you begin implementing genAI in your PSU, it is important to understand the many potential benefits of AI in education, but also to have a clear understanding of the limitations and potential ethical concerns of this technology. We will also have time for Q & A
7/3/24 3:30-4:30 pm Balancing Benefits with AI Limitations, Ethics & Concerns In this session, we will dig deeper into the AI Implementation Roadmap and provide guidance and support for creating your own guidelines in your PSU. We will also have time for Q & A
7/10/24 3:30-4:30 pm AI Literacy For ALL AI Literacy IS digital literacy. Students can and should learn ABOUT AI before they are ready to learn WITH AI. This session will be dedicated to helping PSU leaders develop plans for ongoing AI Literacy training for Staff and Students. We will explore options for teaching & learning ABOUT AI as well as teaching and learning WITH AI. Participants will also leave with a bank of vetted resources.
8/7/24 3:30-4:30 pm Rethinking Assessment in the Age of AI part 1 Adapting Assessment in the age of AI: Generative AI is ubiquitous and we can not prevent its use. This is forcing a shift in pedagogy and reevaluation of how we design assessments. This session will discuss the ethical implications of assessmentin the age of AI as well as AI Detectors, and explore the needs for changing pedagogy and mindsets regariding assessment to ensure we are preparing our students for their futures.
8/14/24 3:30-4:30 pm Rethinking Assessment in the Age of AI part 2 This session will continue the discussion of adapting assessments with a dive deep into creating AI resistant, AI assisted, and AI partnered assessments to ensure today's students are prepared to work with AI and will be competitive in their futures..
